50 Cent To Play Himself In Movie DebutIts becoming more and more common for musicians to try their luck in Hollywood these days. Film and music may be two completely different art forms, but for some (especially those with larger than life egos) it seems easy to make the transition. You can count Will Smith, Beyonce Knowles, Snoop Dogg and Britney Spears among the list of people who have done it, some with great success and others with embarrassingly little. Read More

Police Seize 50 Cent, Jay-Z Mixtapes In Raid On NYC StoreNew York police, in cooperation with the RIAA, arrested five employees of Kim's Video one of the East Village's most beloved independent video and music stores during a Wednesday afternoon raid that netted 500 pirated CD-Rs.
Those arrested were charged with trademark counterfeiting, and police also seized 27 music DVDs, nine DVD burners and several store computers. All of the CD-Rs and DVDs were described by an RIAA spokesperson as "urban in nature" mixtapes, featuring music by artists such as 50 Cent, Nelly, Alicia Keyes and Jay-Z.
One of the store's employees, who was not among those arrested, said police quietly entered through the store's main entrance and presented a warrant. They then combed through the store, looking for pirated material.
"The New York City Police Department's steadfast commitment to the fight against piracy has stamped out yet another significant illegal operation," said Brad Buckles, executive vice president of anti-piracy for the RIAA. "With actions such as these, New York City law enforcement continues to send a strong message to music pirates that this behavior simply will not be tolerated. Retailers who are making money on the backs of musicians and record companies by selling pirated CDs should know that this is absolutely no way to conduct a business."
The raid is just the latest offensive in the RIAA's battle against the growing trend of pirated music sales through small, established businesses. While traditional physical goods or "commercial" piracy previously required large and expensive facilities to produce massive numbers of illegal tapes and CDs, some retailers now possess the potential to yield lucrative returns with only a minimal investment of space and capital, Buckles said.
According to the RIAA's Web site, because several retailers including the owners of convenience stores, liquor stores or corner markets are attempting "to make a quick buck by reselling illegal CDs, or, in some cases, manufacturing counterfeit CDs themselves," the RIAA has adopted an "aggressive 'zero tolerance' approach to retailers engaged in this activity."
A similar raid late last month in the Albany, Schenectady and Troy areas of Upstate New York resulted in 11 arrests, the seizure of 3,400 illicit CD-Rs and more than $54,000.

50 Cent Avoids Jail With Plea Agreement 50 Cent avoided a jail sentence on Friday, taking a plea deal on charges stemming from an incident at a May 2004 concert in which the rapper allegedly jumped into the crowd after being hit with a water bottle. Three counts of assault and battery would be cleared from the Queens-bred MC's arrest record if he abides by the conditions of a two-year probationary term.
50 Cent (whose real name is Curtis Jackson), entered a plea before Springfield District Court Judge Robert Kumor, conceding that the state had enough evidence to convict him, according to The Associated Press. Jackson pleaded not guilty in early November 2004 to assault-and-battery charges related to an alleged altercation at a concert earlier that year.
The alleged incident occurred at an invite-only concert at the Hippodrome nightclub in Springfield, Massachusetts, on May 10, 2004. 50 Cent, who was not expected to perform, took the stage and was allegedly hit in the head by a water bottle thrown from the crowd (see "50 Cent Performance Cut Short After Fan Throws Water At Him"). The rapper leapt into the crowd after the fan, leading to a brawl in which three women were reportedly injured; two claimed they were kicked in the head and face, and one accused Jackson of punching her in the face.
Kumor outlined several conditions Jackson must adhere to in order for the charges to be wiped from his record. 50 Cent, who appeared in a gray double-breasted suit and silver tie, was ordered to stay off of drugs for two years and will undergo random drug screenings during that time to ensure he stays clean.
The rapper will have to attend anger-management counseling and produce an educational anti-violence public service announcement. He was also banned from carrying a gun in Massachusetts. The judge additionally ordered Jackson to pay $3,000 in court costs and make restitution to the victims for their out-of-pocket medical expenses.
If Jackson violates any of the conditions of his probation, a judge could sentence him to two-and-a-half years in jail for each of the three assault-and-battery charges.
Jackson's alleged victims had asked the court to severely punish the rapper. Assistant District Attorney Donna Donato had recommended a two-year sentence, with one year to be served and the second suspended with probation and other conditions.

50 Cent, Jay-Z, Mariah, U2, Coldplay On Board For Massive Live Aid SequelLive Aid mastermind Bob Geldof announced on Tuesday that he has organized a star-studded sequel to the landmark 1985 concerts that raised hundreds of millions of dollars for famine relief in Africa. But this time, Geldof said he's interested in raising awareness, rather than money.
Instead of two shows in two cities (like Live Aid), Geldof has lined up five concerts in five cities for the July 2 event, called Live 8, to shine a spotlight on the issue of poverty in the developing world. Among the stars on board are U2, Mariah Carey, Coldplay, 50 Cent, Jay-Z and the Dave Matthews Band. The concerts which will be free will take place in London's Hyde Park, at the foot of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, at Berlin's Brandenburg Gate, at the Circus Maximus in Rome and the Museum of Art in Philadelphia.
"We arrived here today because I was very reluctant to do this again. I couldn't see how anything could possibly be better than that glorious day 20 years ago, almost perfect in what it achieved," Geldof said at the London press conference. "But Bono and [filmmaker] Richard [Curtis], in particular, kept saying, 'Do it again.' What could we do that was in any way different? It couldn't be about charity anymore."
The concerts are timed to coincide with the meeting of the G8 in Scotland (July 6-8) at which the leaders of the world's wealthiest countries are gathering to discuss alleviating Third World debt (see "Live Aid Organizer Confirms Another 'Big' Concert Is Coming").
The London show is slated to feature Paul McCartney, U2, Mariah Carey, Coldplay, Madonna, Elton John, Sting, Annie Lennox, Dido, Keane, Muse, Scissor Sisters, Joss Stone, Stereophonics, Robbie Williams, R.E.M., Razorlight, Velvet Revolver, the Killers, the Cure, Geldof and Snow Patrol; while Philly will be hosted by Will Smith and feature Bon Jovi, Matthews, Stevie Wonder, Maroon 5, Jay-Z, Sarah McLachlan, Rob Thomas, Keith Urban, 50 Cent, Kaiser Chiefs and P. Diddy.
Berlin has Crosby, Stills & Nash, Lauryn Hill, A-ha, Die Toten Hosen and the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson. So far, Jamiroquai, Placebo, Craig David, Andrea Bocelli, Johnny Halliday, Manu Chao, Youssou N'Dour and tennis-player-turned-singer Yannick Noah are on board in Paris; and Duran Duran, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw are slated to play Rome.
Organizers also said plans are being sketched out to hold more concerts in other G8 countries, but they did not announce those events on Tuesday (May 31). The remaining G8 members are Japan, Canada and Russia.
In advance of the G8 summit, Geldof is also planning the Long Walk of Justice, in which he hopes to draw hundreds of thousands of people to the Scottish capital of Edinburgh to make a show of support in front of the gathered dignitaries. Live 8 is the latest link in a chain of international organizations working on this goal, joining the ONE campaign in the U.S., which has been supported through a series of public-service announcements starring Brad Pitt, Tom Hanks, George Clooney, Diddy and a host of other luminaries.
"We will not tolerate the further pain of the poor while we have the financial and moral means to prevent it," Geldof said. "The boys and girls with guitars will finally get to turn the world on its axis. What we started 20 years ago is coming to a political point in a few weeks. What we do next is seriously, properly, historically and politically important."
Speaking to CNN Tuesday morning, Matthews said, "I think awareness is the biggest thing, which is sometimes what's needed to move the leaders of the world." Growing up in Johannesburg, South Africa, Matthews said he saw firsthand how an event like Live Aid can help change people's minds. "The people of the world rose up and changed [things]," he said of the first concert. "This is another opportunity to say Africa shouldn't be indebted to us ... This is another chance we have to bring together the power of the people to move our leaders."
The original Live Aid took place at Wembley Stadium in London and at Philadelphia's JFK Stadium on July 13, 1985, and raised $245 million for famine relief in Africa. It was watched by more than 1.5 billion people worldwide and featured sets from U2, Queen, David Bowie, the Who, Elvis Costello, B.B. King, Black Sabbath, Run-DMC, Sting, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Judas Priest, Santana, Elton John, Madonna, McCartney, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and a reunited Led Zeppelin with Phil Collins on drums.
