DiCaprio Emerged Best Actor
|
||
Leonardo DiCaprio finally clinched his Best Actor (Drama) award for 'The Aviator.'
The Aviator soared above the competition at the Jan. 16 62nd annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony.
Martin Scorsese’s glimpse at the achievements and eccentricities of Howard Hughes was named best dramatic motion picture and Leonardo DiCaprio emerged as best actor in a drama for his portrayal of the billionaire playboy and mogul.
This will likely be Scorsese’s only moment of glory — he’s not as popular with Oscar voters as he is with his pals in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
The Golden Globes are chosen by the 93 members HFPA, journalists living in L.A., who write for foreign publications.
Hilary Swank achieved a major and much-deserved upset when she took the Globe for best actress in a drama from Britain’s Imelda Staunton, who played the backstreet abortionist in Vera Drake.
Swank plays the boxer in Clint Eastwood’s powerful drama Million Dollar Baby which was late out of the gate, but has quickly become a top contender for this year’s Oscars, whose nominees will be announced on Jan. 25.
Ironically, Warner Bros. had been touting The Aviator and The Phantom of the Opera over Million Dollar Baby until Eastwood’s film became a critics’ darling.
Sideways, Alexander Payne’s bittersweet story of male midlife crisis, took the best comedy or musical Globe from such heavyweights as Ray, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Incredibles.
It’s another film critics have turned into a major player for this year’s Oscars.
After losing in both the best supporting feature film and TV actor categories, Jamie Foxx nabbed the best actor award in a comedy or musical for his role as Ray Charles in Ray, guaranteeing he’ll be duking it out in the best actor category opposite DiCaprio in the Oscar race.Annette Bening was named best actress in a musical or comedy for playing the scheming stage diva in Being Julia, the comedy produced by Canada’s Robert Lantos. This win will help her get a berth in the best actress Oscar category.
Two of the major surprises of the evening came when Clive Owen and Natalie Portman were named best supporting actor and actress for their roles as cheating lovers opposite Julia Roberts and Jude Law in Mike Nichols’ stark drama Closer. Kudos to HFPA for acknowledging their performances are superior to those of national critics’ favourites Thomas Haden Church and Virginia Madsen from Sideways.
The Hollywood Foreign Press honoured Eastwood as best director for Million Dollar Baby, but foolishly slighted him with a best dramatic picture award.
The best feature film screenplay award went to Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor for Sideways.
The Globes also honour achievements on the small screen and this year they named Nip/Tuck the best drama on TV and the laughable Desperate Housewives the best comedy.
Teri Hatcher took best actress in a TV comedy for her role as Susan Mayer on Desperate Housewives. Her silly, muddled acceptance speech proves she’s got some good direction and good lines each week on Desperate Housewives.
Mariska Hargitay from Law & Order: Special Victims Unit walked away with a Globe for best actress in a drama, with Ian McShane of Deadwood being her counterpart as best actor in TV drama.
Best actress in a TV film went to Glenn Close for The Lion in Winter and Geoffrey Rush won best actor in a TV film for playing Peter Sellers in The Life and Death of Peter Sellers, which was named best TV movie or mini series.
William Shatner proved there really is life after Star Trek when he nabbed the best supporting actor Globe for his role on Boston Legal.
Robin Williams was honoured with the Cecil B. DeMille Award for his contributions to the entertainment both on screen and off.
