"The Aviator," directed by Martin Scorsese and written by John Logan, tells the story of aviation pioneer Howard Hughes (Leonardo DiCaprio), the eccentric billionaire industrialist and Hollywood film mogul, famous for romancing some of the world's most beautiful women.

The Oscar nominations were announced and 'The Aviator' is out in front.

It's up for 11, including Best Picture and Best Director for Martin Scorsese. This could finally be his year as he's never won an Oscar for directing.

There are no real surprises in the Oscar nominations but we have got some British hope in the forms of Kate Winslet and Imelda Staunton who're both up for Best Actress, Sophie Okonedo for Best Supporting Actress and Clive Owen's up for Best Supporting Actor. Mike Leigh is also in the running for Best Director.

In the Best Actor category the bookies reckons it's between Jamie Foxx in 'Ray' or Leonardo DiCaprio in 'The Aviator'. Leo's happy the film's getting so much attention:

"The fact that the film got recognised in so many different categories is the greatest thing for me."

"Because it's really not the type of movie you get to see any more. It's an epic character piece, it's an indie film with a hundred million dollar budget."

The awards ceremony will take place in LA on February 27th.
