Howie's nickname -'Sweet D.'- says it all because he is always charming, nice, and very obliging. Orlando-based Howie grew up as the youngest out of 5 kids. As his sibs were much elder than Howie all of them treated him very loving. Howie's family gave him all the love and support he needed because he wanted to be an entertainer since he was able to walk. Therefore, Howie got very well-experienced in acting, singing, and dancing before he became a Backstreet Boy.
Starting from a very young age Howie did roles on 'The Wizard of Oz', 'Babes in Toyland', and 'Camelot' at several Orlando theatres. Later on Howie got roles on movies like 'A Cop and a Half' and 'Parenthood' and Howie was even chosen to be with the famous 'All State Choir'. During all that time at theatres, movies, and the choir ...
Howie always took singing and dancing lessons to improve all of his abilities. Howie's diligence payed off because his voice reached the top when he did the 'Unchained Melody' in front of the audience from Edgewater Highschool at Orlando. On this special day it was the very first time when Howie made the whole audience scream and even cry ... just like nowadays!
But at this time it was still a long and hard way to become a Backstreet Boy. So Howie went on to do numerous castings and auditions. At some of these auditions Howie met two other guys again & again. They were named Nick and AJ but none of them had an idea what will happen years later.
As he had no real breakthrough in the showbiz when Howie graduated at highschool ... he started to study at the University of Florida. On one day when Howie was on holidays at Puerto Rico ... his family got a call from Gloria who was an assistent of Lou Pearlman.
Gloria wanted Howie to sing for Lou who tried to get the Backstreet Boys together. Gloria & Lou liked Howie's voice and they promised to call again when their dreams about the band will come to life. Unfortunately Howie used the name 'Tony Donetti' at any casting or audition. His agent thought it was cool and so nobody was aware knew that 'Tony Donetti' is Howie Dorough -besides Gloria.
But this was not enough ... Gloria got very sick and she even had to quit her job. During all this trouble Gloria lost all documents about 'Tony Donetti' and so it took Lou a while to find Howie again.
How lucky we are that Lou finally made it because the Backstreet Boys wouldn't be the same without Howie's smooth and absolutely incredible voice. Howie is a real 'Prince Charming' because he's the one who mostly calmes down his fellow bandmembers if any conflict is rising high.
He's the one who always touches the audience when he's giving away roses. No matter if you get one of the roses or not ... Howie's warm-hearted attitude and his thankfulness to the fans can be felt all over the world at any venue, any place and any time.
