Sound Loaded Album

Ricky Martin sold 20 million copies worldwide of his self-titled English-language debut, making "Livin' La Vida Loca," "The Cup of Life," and other hits the center of 1999's Latin explosion. But far be it for him to rest on his laurels.
Just over a year later, Martin is back with Sound Loaded, a follow-up that doesn't quite match the fire power of its predecessor, but does contain enough sparks -- and photos of the superstar (with a new hairstyle no less) -- to keep fans satisfied.
Sticking pretty close to the formula that made Ricky Martin a success, the album kicks off with the high-octane "She Bangs," a tour de force of piano, horns, guitars, and saxophone over a thumping dance beat. The song is clearly this album's "Livin' La Vida Loca," although its lyrics ("She stings like a bee / Like every girl in history") aren't nearly as memorable.
Continuing the excitement are the exotic, '70s-flavored "Saint Tropez" and the fiery, perfect-for-booty-shaking "Loaded," the latter a catchy mix of Latin swing and rock in which Martin spits out the lyrics at lightening-fast pace.
Elsewhere Sound Loaded takes a nod from recent pop hits of the past two years. The uptempo "Amor" features a piano hook that recalls Santana's "Smooth," albeit faster, while "Nobody Wants to Be Lonely" treads a little too close to boy-band-ballad territory such bland lyrics as "I've been waiting for you all my life / Nobody wants to be lonely / So why don't you let me love you."
Unfortunately, the other ballads on Sound Loaded don't fair very well either. "Come to Me" bears a striking resemblance to the superior "She's All I Ever Had" from Ricky Martin, but suffers from a weak refrain, and while the Diane Warren/Desmond Child-co-penned "The Touch" starts off promisingly, it melds into mediocrity by the time it reaches it chorus.
Sound Loaded may not make any new converts to Latin pop, but it's certain to keep Martin's existing fan base for at least a little while longer.
